Lubricant Selection: Viscosity and Approvals
Understand viscosity, manufacturer requirements and application when selecting engine, transmission or hydraulic oil. Prepare a lubricant enquiry.

A common mistake when choosing lubricants is to treat the viscosity printed on the pack as the only selection criterion. The correct product is determined by its application, the equipment manufacturer’s requirements and its technical characteristics. Engine oil, transmission fluid and hydraulic oil do not perform the same role.
Identify the application first
Clarify which system will use the lubricant. A passenger car engine may have different requirements from a truck engine or hydraulic power unit. The vehicle or machine manual is the primary reference. The complete name of the existing oil also helps with research; the brand name alone is not sufficient.
What does a viscosity grade tell you?
An engine oil’s SAE grade describes aspects of its flow behaviour under specified temperature conditions. It does not explain every performance characteristic or establish suitability for every engine. Two oils of the same viscosity may meet different requirements. Do not assume that thicker oil always provides better protection.
Antalya’s warm climate alone is not a reason to override the grade specified in the manual. Assess the choice against the manufacturer’s instructions for that engine and its operating conditions.
Read specifications and approvals together
Compare the required manufacturer specification with the product’s current technical data sheet. “Approved” and “meets requirements” are not necessarily equivalent statements. If your application requires formal approval, verify that the specific product holds it. Do not apply one product’s claims to an entire range.
A short pre-purchase checklist
- Vehicle or equipment make, model and engine details.
- The system being lubricated.
- Required viscosity and complete specification from the manual.
- Full name of the current product and technical data sheet if available.
- Pack size, quantity and planned service date.
Preparing these details also lets you compare quotations for equivalent technical requirements. Price per litre alone does not make products with different specifications interchangeable.
Frequently asked questions
Are oils with the same viscosity interchangeable?
Not automatically. Performance requirements, manufacturer specifications and application must match as well.
Can a product name justify a longer oil change interval?
The vehicle or equipment manufacturer sets the maintenance programme. A lubricant marketing claim does not automatically change the service interval for your application.
